Consisting primarily of the Civil War letters of Edward Laight Wells (1839-1917), a northerner and member of the Charleston Light Dragoons (Co. K, 4th South Carolina Cavalry), 1864-1865, addressed mainly to his parents in New Jersey; letters discuss the mood in Charleston during the secession crisis, 1860, fighting with Hampton's Legion, 1864-1865, and the immediate aftermath of the war; other letters of Eliza Carolina Middleton Huger Smith (1824-1919), wife of William Mason Smith, of Charleston, discuss the health and welfare of her family during the war. Also includes Ann Huger's commonplace book, 1861-1865, containing quotations, autographs, and Confederate notes; scrapbook, 1862-1867, mainly poetry, manuscript and clipped from newspapers; diary, 11 June 1865 - 7 Aug. 1866, of Isabella Johnannes Middleton Smith, Athens and Augusta, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., with irregular entries re visits paid and received and commenting on the young men of the area; Eliza Carolina Middleton Huger Smith's commonplace book, c. 1865 -c. 1914, containing clippings, recipes, quotations, genealogical information, and poetry of J. Allen Smith (1851-1863); and miscellaneous volume, 1867-1873, containing accounts and verse. Other persons represented include Edward Laight Wells' wife, Anna Mason Smith.

Wells, Edward Laight, 1839-

Charleston, S.C., merchant and author. Born in New York, N.Y., he was the son of Thomas Lawrence Wells (b. 1800), a lawyer. E.L. Wells moved to the South, where he became an advocate of Southern nationalism. In 1863 he enlisted in Company K, 4th S.C. Cavalry (the Charleston Light Dragoons). After the war he became a cotton broker in Charleston. He died in 1917. His wife, Anna Mason Smith Wells, died in 1924. Also wrote under pseudonyms: Quentin Saxon and E.L. Sllew.
